Some highlights for CEC 2011....
We are very excited to be going to the new Convention Centre in downtown Vancouver for these two days. Our
Opening Keynote speaker is John Allen Jr., an American journalist based in Rome who specializes in news about the Catholic Church. During the coverage of the death of Pope John Paul II, Allen frequently appeared on TV. He is senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter and the Vatican analyst of CNN and NPR. Allen is also the author of several books about the Catholic Church. One of his latest books is titled:
The Future Church: How Ten Trends are Revolutionizing the Catholic Church. He has written two biographies of Pope Benedict XVI, the first one published in 2000 when he was still a cardinal and the first biography of him in English. Perhaps Allen's best-known work is his weekly column about world Catholicism called "All Things Catholic." He frequently delivers lectures discussing Vatican issues and his latest works.
Our Closing Keynote speaker, Elizabeth Nguyen Thi Thu Hong is originally from Vietnam and is the youngest sister of the late Cardinal Francois-Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan, who died on September 16, 2002, and whose beatification process was opened in April 2007. A wife and mother of three children, Elizabeth lives in Ontario where she taught for the Windsor-Essex Catholic Schools for 24 years. She has been translating, into both English and French, her brother’s writings to his family during his 13 years of imprisonment. These letters are an eloquent testimony to the faith that inspired the Cardinal’s life.
On each of the two days there will be various opportunities to choose from among a diverse selection of speakers who will speak on a wide range of topics: Pam Stenzel –
‘Communicating Chastity Effectively with Your Students’; Kelly Gallagher – ‘Deeper Reading’; Damian Cooper –
‘Plan-Assess-Teach’; Danny Brassell – Differentiated Instruction; Father John McCarthy –
‘Ecology & Catholic Social Teachings’ and Mary Ruth Coleman –
Special Education, to name only a few. Watch for further details to be posted on this website.
